Internet2
The Division of State Information Technology (DSIT) supports high-speed access connections to Internet2. Currently, the three major research institutions, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina are members of the Abilene (Internet2) network. Each university has a separate OC-3 connection to the point of presence (POP) in Columbia using Spirit Telecom (formerly SCNET). They are then aggregated into one OC-12 that connects to the Southern Crossroads (SoX) at Georgia Tech.
Why Use DSIT?
These universities, along with the Division of State Information Technology (DSIT), formerly the Division of the State Chief Information Officer (CIO), were approved as a Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP) in March 2004. This allows other higher education and K–12s to connect to the Abilene network. These SEGPs will pay the access charges to connect to the State backbone; their bandwidth and a connection fee are assessed based on the number of users.
